Fire Fighting system

AUTOMATIC FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEM AND HIGH VELOCITY WATER SPRAY SYSTEM

SCOPE

This section covers the requirements of fire detection and alarm system (FDA) for substation building, high velocity water spray system for transformer bays

DESIGN BASIS FOR FDA SYSTEM
1.    FDA system shall include but not be limited to the following areas :-
2.    Control room
3.    MV & LV switchgear rooms
4.    Cable vault
5.    220/11KV, conversion & rectifier transformers in outdoor switchyard.

The  computer aided microprocessor based intelligent type FDA  system shall be a software controlled automatic system and shall provide necessary programmed activities and various controls.

Fire Extinguishers
Portable/Mobile Fire Extinguishers and Fire Buckets shall be provided for all the areas as per IS-2190.

DESIGN BASIS FOR HIGH VELOCITY WATER SPRAY SYSTEM

  • An automatic HVWS system with quartzoid bulb shall be provided for the outdoor transformers along with detection network. The system shall be designed in such  a manner that when the surrounding temperature surpasses the set value, the quartzoid bulb will explode, thereby giving an indication in the control panel, which in turn will initiate the water sprinkler system.
  • High velocity water spray system shall be provided for the Transformer. Complete impingement on all exterior surfaces of the Transformer shall have to be protected. Where there is insufficient space to install water spray nozzles underneath transformer, horizontal projection shall be provided to protect the entire surfaces underneath the transformer. Transformer shall be protected using ring of nozzles including the top of the transformer
  • Automatic detection equipment shall be so located and adjusted as to operate reliably. For transformer the detector sprinklers shall be as close to the shell as possible at all places subject to electrical clearance.
  • There shall be a ring of detectors around the top of the transformer and a second ring around the base. Continuous ring mains shall be avoided.

EQUIPMENT DETAILS

FDA System
The system shall include the following :-
·         Addressable/intelligent type ionization detectors.
·         Addressable/intelligent type photo-electric detectors.
·         Addressable/intelligent type fire alarm panel with battery and in-built printer located in SCADA room.
·         Addressable/intelligent type manual call point
·         Electronic hooters (Addressable)
·         Response indicators
·         Control module (Addressable)
·         Monitor module (Addressable)
·         Relay/contracts
·         Control cables
·         Special cables

Addressable Intelligent Ionisation Type Smoke Detector
Ionisation smoke detector shall be self compensating the effects of air temperature, humidity dust and atmospheric pressure. Each detector shall have built-in microprocessor and it shall be possible to change the sensitivity of each detector from fire alarm panel.

Addressable Intelligent Photo Electric Type Smoke Detector
The photo electric smoke detector shall automatically adjust to compensate for possible effects of dirt and dust accumulation. The detector shall have built-in microprocessor and it shall be possible to change the sensitivity of each detector from control panel.

Addressable Intelligent Type Heat Detectors
Heat detectors shall be quick response and use rate of rise/fixed temperature principle. The detector shall automatically adjust to compensate for possible effects of change in ambient temperature.

Remote Response Indicator
·         One remote response indicator shall be provided for each detector located above the false ceiling/false floor. The remote response indicator shall be suitable for false ceiling/wall mounting and provided with a light emitting diode for alarm state indication.
·         Adequate slack shall be available in the cable connecting the remote indicator to the detector so as to allow ease of dismantling the false ceiling/false floor without damaging the remote response indicator/false ceiling/false floor panel.

Addressable Interface Unit
The interface unit shall be suitable for initiating devices such as manual call point, pressure switch, flow switches, level switches, potential fire contacts etc. in the addressable loop.

Electronic hooter
The hooter shall have distinctive tones with different frequencies for indication of first, second fire alarm and fault alarm. After ‘acknowledgement’ of alarm the hooter shall silence and a “Buzzer” shall give “beep tone” till the alarm condition persists.

Manual Call Push-button Station:(Addressable/Intelligent)
Manual call push button station shall preferably be of the manual break-glass type which shall automatically signal an alarm on break of the glass

Micro-processor Based-intelligent Fire Alarm Control Panel
Fire alarm control panel shall function as communication interface between Central Processing Unit and sensors and controlled devices. Control panel shall be intelligent, each with its own microcomputer and memory.

Cables
All type of special cables required for the fire detection and alarm system shall be provided.

High Velocity Water Spray System
The system shall include, but not be limited to the following :-
·         Electric Motor driven pump
·         Diesel Engine driven pump
·         Jockey pump
·         Deluge Valves
·         Spray Nozzles (Open type)
·         Pipe & Fittings
·         Gate Valves, Non-return Valves, Isolating Valves etc.
·         Piping Network including supports, instruments etc as required
·         Detection system

Pump House & Reservoir
A common pump house with equipment handling facilities shall be provided for high velocity water spray system, fire hydrant system as well as drinking and sanitation water system. The civil works for the pump house will not be in scope of SIEMENS. Siemens will provide and install one no. motor driven pump, one no. diesel driven pump and one no. jockey pump in the pump house.
